一琴ワールド全開♪　俸禄図二所　Houroku-zu Futatokoro　小柄編

本日は特別保存刀装具に指定された『俸禄図二所』（ほうろくずふたところ）を鑑賞したいと思います。

目貫、小柄、笄の三つの意匠を合わせて作られたものを三所物（みところもの）といい、二所物（ふたところもの）とは、そのうちの二つの刀装具の意匠を合わせて作られたものをいいます。

三所物も、二所物も、龍の意匠や、家紋の意匠など、全て同じデザインで揃えるものがほとんどですが、上工や優工と評される一琴の『俸禄図二所』は、デザインで揃えたものではなく、一琴の遊び心満点の作品になっています。

俸禄とは現在のお給料のことですが、なぜ鹿と蜂の意匠なのでしょうか。

それには、語呂合わせが関係しています。

こちらの作品には二つ意味が込められているので、掛詞と言ったほうがいいかもしれませんね。言葉遊びが好きな日本人らしい作品の感じがしますね。

俸＝蜂、禄＝鹿のように同じ読み方ができる漢字の語呂合わせと

「鹿の角を蜂が刺す」という諺からも選んだモチーフのようです。

作品の一つ目に込められた意味は、俸禄ということで、縁起がいいこと。

二つ目に込められた意味は、諺から、鹿の角はとても堅く蜂が刺しても鹿が動じないことから、勇ましいことの意味合いも持たせた二所物になっています。

I would like to appreciate the “Houroku- zu Futatokoro” designated as a special preservation sword orthotic device.

Products made with the same design by Menuki, Kozuka and Kōgai are called Mitokoromono.Futatokoromono is one in which two of the following are made with the same design: menuki, Kozuka, and Kougai.

Most Mitokoromono and Futatokoromono are all matched with the same design, such as dragons, family crests, and so on.

Ikkin’s “Houroku-zu Futatokoro,” however, is not a combination of designs, but rather a playful work of art.

Houroku means salary, but why are deer and bee design used?

It has to do with the word “word”.Since this piece has two meanings, it might be better to call it a Kakekotoba.Kakekotoba is a single word with two or more meanings. It has the feel of a work that is typical of Japanese people who like to play with words.

The motif seems to have been chosen because of the combination of kanji characters that can be read the same way, such as 俸 = bee and 禄 = deer.

The motif seems to have been chosen also from the proverb “a bee stings a deer’s antlers.

The first meaning behind the piece is that it is a salary design, which is fortunate.

The second meaning is that the deer’s antlers are so hard that the deer will not move even if stung by a bee. This also has the meaning of bravery.

小柄とは小刀の柄であり、手で持ったり握ったりする部分のことです。鞘に装着するときは、小柄の先に小刀をつけます。小刀を装着した状態のものを小柄と呼ぶこともあります。

当時の人々はやりとりをするのに頻繁に手紙を書いては送っていました。植物繊維を絡み合わせた和紙は手でちぎりにくいので、小柄は今でいうペーパーナイフの役割をしており、当時の人々の必需品でした。

紙を切る他には、枝を削って楊枝代わりにしたり、緊急用の武器に使うこともあったそうです。

鞘の差し裏（刀を腰に差したとき、体側にくる方）に設けられた櫃に納めて用いられた、実用とオシャレも兼ねた便利グッズでした。

A Kozuka is the handle of a small sword, the part that is held or gripped by the hand. When the sword is attached to a Saya(scabbard), the small sword is attached to the end of the Kozuka. A Kozuka with a small sword attached is sometimes called a Kozuka.

People at that time wrote and sent letters frequently to communicate.

Washi, which is made of intertwined plant fibers, is difficult to tear by hand, so the Kozuka served as what we now call a paper knife, and was a necessity for the people of that time.

Besides cutting paper, they were also used to sharpen branches to use as toothpicks or as emergency weapons.

A Kozuka is stored in a hole in the Sashiura (the side where the scabbard comes to the body when the sword is inserted at the waist). It was a useful product that was both practical and fashionable.
